Abstract

The Ateneo Art Gallery: An art museum for our time

Ramon E.S. Lerma, Director and Chief Curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery, discusses the important role of the museum as a platform for contemporary art practice in the Philippines.

Established over forty years ago through an art bequest made by the late visual artist, art educator and philanthropist Fernando Zobel, the Ateneo’s permanent collection has since grown to become a cultural resource of local and international significance, inspiring an innovative exhibition program that seeks to capture the richness and complexity of the art of our time. Recently, the museum embarked upon an ambitious public program that includes the annual Ateneo Art Awards, with the intention of making contemporary art more relevant to the Filipino public.
