Jyotindra Jain was born in 1943 in Indore / India, studied Cultural Anthropology, Indian Studies and Ancient Indian History in Mumbai / Bombay and Vienna, where he completed his doctoral dissertation in 1972. Jyotindra Jain was Director of the Crafts Museum, Delhi, Professor at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and is now at Indira Gandhi National Centre For the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi. Jain has been an Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellow, a Homi Bhabha Fellow and a Visiting Professor at the Center for the Study for World Religions, Harvard University, USA.
His teaching and research encompass the entire breadth of folk and tribal art, Indian popular visual culture, ritual dynamics and cultural institutions of the 19th and 20th centuries.
