Emanoel Araújo, is an artist, collector and curator, and was born in Salvador da Bahia, in 1940. Throughout his artistic career he has received many awards among them the Gold Medal of the III Graphic Biennial of Florence, Italy (1972), and he was elected Best Engraver of the Year, 1974 and Best Sculptor of the Year, 1983, both awards made by the Association of Art Critics of São Paulo. As museum director he worked in the Bahia Art Museum (1981-1983) and the Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo (1992-2002). Since 2004, he is Head Curator and Director of the Museu AfroBrasil. Among his major exhibition contributions are: The Magic World of Baroque, Negro in Body in Soul, Road Map, Popular Art, and Black Memories, Memories of Negroes.
