Ivo Mesquita
CV
Ivo Mesquita is a curator, critic and artwriter living in São Paulo, Brazil. He holds a B.A. in journalism (1972) and B.A. in art history (1975) from the Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, where he also attained his M.A. degree in arts in 1980.
From 1980 to 1988, Mesquita worked at the São Paulo Biennale Foundation, Brazil, where he curated the exhibitions Expressionism in Brazil (1985, with Stella Teixiera de Barros) and Unique Imaginaires (1987, with Sonia Salzstein-Goldberg).
In 1988, he participated in the Curator in Residence-Program at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Winnipeg, Canada.
Mesquita has curated such exhibitions as Panorama de Arte Brasileira 1995 at MAM – The São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (1995); Las Americas II: Body & Space at MASP – The São Paulo Art Museum (1995); Daniel Senise: the Enlightening Gaze at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Monterrey, Mexico (1994); Cartographies at Winnipeg Art Gallery, Canada (1993); The Desire in the Academy 1846-1917 at Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo, Brazil (1991); Jorge Guinle: Dense Fragments for the XX São Paulo Biennale, Brazil (1989).
Mesquita organized, in 1991, the symposium Art and Identity in Latin America (Memorial da América Latina, São Paulo) and, in 1994, the seminar Multiculturalism and Contemporary Visuality (O Estado de São Paulo Newspaper, São Paulo).
In 1992, he received a grant from the Vitae Foundation to write the book The São Paulo Biennale, the History of a Cultural Institution 1951-1991. He has lectured on Latin American Art in Canada, the United States and Latin America; as juror he participated in many Brazilian and Latin American exhibitions; to periodicals like Guia das Artes (Brazil), Art Nexus (Colombia), and Poliester (Mexico) he contributed numerous articles. Together with Noreen Tomassi and Mary Jane Jacob he is editor of the book American Visions/Visiones de las Americas (New York, ACA Books/Allworth Press, 1994). At present he is curator in residence at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.
Recently, he was appointed artistic director of the 28th São Paulo Bienial 2008.
